18 Wheeler Wreck Resulting in Cervical Fusion and Neck Surgery: Albuquerque Trucking Accident Lawyer

In any type of motor vehicle collision, your neck and spine is very vulnerable to injury. Even with the best safety equipment such as side-impact curtains, strong seatbelts, and contouring seats, your back is still very vulnerable to serious injury. This is especially true of your neck, which is the cervical portion of your spine, and is always susceptible to whiplash injuries. It should be no surprise that 18 wheeler wrecks are more likely to cause significant harm to your neck and cervical spine. One such injury that our Albuquerque trucking accident lawyer frequently sees is a cervical fusion, which is type of surgery with devastating and debilitating effects.

Here at the NM Truck Accident Attorneys, our Albuquerque trucking accident lawyer knows not only the applicable law necessary to prove your case, but also the applicable medicine necessary to establish your damages. A cervical fusion is a type of very serious injury which requires a lawyer to have a significant amount of medical knowledge in order to explain to the judge and jury what your injuries are and why you should be entitled to certain compensation. Trust in our law firm to do just that for you. Call to schedule a FREE consultation by dialing (505) 308-1556.

What is a Cervical Fusion After an 18 Wheeler Wreck

A cervical fusion is a type of neck surgery which results in permanent disability every time it is performed; there is no “minor” spinal fusion and this is a serious type of spinal injury. This is because a spinal fusion takes several vertebrae and binds them together. This naturally results in a loss of range of motion, as the vertebrae which were intended to wiggle or move slightly can no longer do so. This restricts range of motion.

The ultimate goal of a spinal fusion is to reduce pressure on your spinal nerves and other vital structures which may be damaged or could be damages without the repair. A cervical fusion can be performed either anteriorly through the front of your neck, or posteriorly through the back of your neck. The surgeon will make small incisions and try to use the natural folds of your skin to hide the scars.

During a cervical fusion, a portion of your disc between your neck vertebrae may be removed and replaced with a cadaver bone, piece of cement, metal, or another artificial material. Pedicle screws will be drilled into the left and right sides of the vertebrae which are above and below the affected disc and damaged area in your neck. Rods are then inserted into those screws, which can be twisted to tighten the rods and hold them into place.

As a result of the cervical fusion and neck surgery, you will have a decreased range of motion. The extent of your fusion depends on how many levels have been fused in the neck, and how high or low the fusion is performed on the neck portion of your spine. When a cervical fusion is required to be performed after an 18 wheeler wreck, it is very likely that the extent of loss of range of motion will be higher than a typical motor vehicle accident.
