FMCSA's Top Ten Most Common Factors in New Mexico Trucking Accidents

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regularly studies 18 wheeler crash trends.  This includes common causes and common violations.  This is how new regulations, guidelines, and training can be implemented to begin reducing the dangerous trends and increasing the safety trends.  Relating to the most dangerous trends which frequently cause big rig wrecks, here are is a list of the most common factors that our New Mexico trucking accident lawyers want you to know.

Top Ten Most Common Factors in Causing New Mexico Trucking Accidents

According to the FMCSA's study, here are the top 10 factors causing 18 wheeler wrecks throughout the United States:

  • Braking problems;
  • Traffic flow interruption (such as traffic, rubbernecking, congestion, crashes);
  • Prescription drug use of the truck driver;
  • Traveling too facts for the conditions;
  • Unfamiliarity with the roadway;
  • Roadway problems;
  • Required to stop before crash such as a traffic light, crosswalk, or other yield;
  • Over-the-counter drug use;
  • Inadequate surveillance and monitoring; and
  • Fatigued or drowsy driving.

The FMCSA categorizes these factors causing semi tractor trailer crashes into four groups.  The four categories are the following:

Non-performance - when the truck driver fails to do something, such as falling asleep, medical emergency, or the truck driver was otherwise unable to physically react.

Recognition - when the truck driver was inattentive due to distractions such as cell phone use, or something else in or outside of the truck like roadway signs.

Decision - when the truck driver makes a poor decision such as driving too fast, misjudging turns, or tailgating.

Performance - when the truck driver reacted wrong such as panicking, overcompensating, or simply using poor control, ability, or effort in operating the truck.
