Heart Injuries Due to New Mexico Auto Accident

It goes without saying that your heart is a major organ.  It is well-protected behind bone, muscle, and significant tissue.  Motor vehicles further protect your chest and heart from injury with seat belts, air bags, and size cushions.  But this does not mean that your heart is impervious to damage.  Heart injuries caused by a New Mexico auto accident are common, especially in New Mexico trucking accidents.  This means that victims could suffer irreparable and permanent damage to their heart which could create a lifetime of disability.  In severe cases it could result in the wrongful death of a victim.

Symptoms of Heart Injuries After a New Mexico Auto Accident

A heart injury may not be obvious after a New Mexico auto accident.  This is especially true if a victim was particularly "shooken up" or tossed around in a collision, or if a vicitm has other severe injuries like broken bones or brain injuries.  These other more painful injuries may draw a victim's attention away from a heart injury and to that more salient injury.

Thus, it is important to know the signs and symptoms of a heart injury in order to be able to protect yourself or a loved one.  Some of the most common symptoms of a heart injury after a serious New Mexico auto accident include the following:

  • Feeling weak;
  • Feeling faint or lightheaded;
  • Shortness of breath and inability to catch one's breath;
  • Vomitting;
  • Nausea;
  • Pain in the chest;
  • Pain in the left shoulder;
  • Rib pain or sternum pain;
  • Racing pulse or heartbeat;
  • Wheezing;
  • Rapid or throbbing heartbeat;
  • Dizziness; and
  • Other related symptoms.

Types of Heart Injuries After a NM Auto Accident

There are many different types of heart injuries which could be caused by a New Mexico auto accident.  It is important to realize that your heart is not commonly injured or suspectible to injuries unless there is signficiant trauma imposed on it, like the trauma in an auto accident.  This means that it is very likely your heart injuries are related to the negligence of the driver causing the auto accident.

The most common types of heart injuries due to a motor vehicle crash include the following:

Aortic Rupture - This is the main "branch" coming off the heart which pumps massive amounts of blood into the body.  The aorta is very strong and powerful, yet if it is damaged it can result in a quick but very painful death.  Auto accidents can cause an aortic rupture if they are particularly forceful like in an 18 wheeler wreck or high-speed collision.

Cardic Rupture - Like an aortic rupture, this is damage to the walls of the heart itself which result in a leak.  If the rupture is big enough, it can result in a near-instant death.  If the leak is smaller, a patient may be able to seek quick medical treatment but there is still a high mortality rate for this type of injury.

Cardiac Arrhythmia - Damage to the heart could also affect how the heart functions which may result in episodes of irregular heartbeats.  While this could be atrial fibrillation (a-fib), it could also result in clotting disorders which could cause a patient's death.

Aortic dissections - Instead of a complete rupture, an aortic dissection is where one layer of the aorta is torn and blood flows into it which creates a bubble.  This can result in clotting disorders and irregular rhymes.  The symptoms of an aortic dissection are unique in that a patient would have one-side of their body have weakness or loss of sensation.  When treated quickly, an aortic dissection and be resolved and a patient's life saved with minimal damage to the heart.  However, the failure to diagnose an aortic dissection could lead to heart failure or a full rupture if the blood pushes through all three layers of the aorta.
